Sonya Cowen

Head of R & D and Partner

BA(Hons); Registered Psychologist 

Sonya leads the development and implementation of Winsborough’s new products and solutions. She works alongside clients to develop their leaders, both individually and collectively, and coaches teams for effective performance.  

Executive selection, succession, and development, and gleaning insights from organisational data are areas of specialty, including providing advice on selecting talent (e.g., Southern Cross Healthcare), designing leadership frameworks (e.g., Genesis executive leadership framework) and implementing successful succession planning (e.g., Beca).  

She’s seen the recent global situation as testing leaders' abilities to balance engagement with isolation. They have to consciously pursue the elements of organisational culture that are important to them. A growth area for her is in bicultural practice.  

Before joining Winsborough, Sonya was head of the Royal NZ Navy Psychology Services (2000-2006) working across all NZDF levels. She has also led NZDF Force Extraction Teams, designed and facilitated assessment centres, and developed and implemented performance appraisal systems for both civilian and military personnel.
