Winsborough's Leadership Development Director, Helen Horn, recently interviewed Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic about his controversially titled book: "Why do so many incompetent men become leaders?"
They discussed the different styles of male versus female leaders and how it is that more men become leaders, even though women seem to have more personality characteristics suited to leadership.
Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic's advice to organisations who want more competent leaders:
- Follow the science - focus on the traits that make people better leaders ie. humility, integrity, self-awareness, empathy, self-control and altruism.
- Distrust your instincts - don't follow your intuition. Stop over-relying on your gut feelings or unstructured interviews in your decision-making.
- Don't lower the bar for women, but rather, raise the bar for men.
